The Superior High School track and field team hosted its first home meet of the season Tuesday at the outdoor track behind Wessman Arena.

The brisk weather had competitors huddling under blankets between races, but it didn’t slow the teams from Ashland, who claimed the team titles for both the boys and girls.

Superior, on the other hand, was very cautious in the cold after senior Raya Kosey suffered an injury during the 100-meter dash. She fell clutching her left hamstring and was unable to compete in the remainder of the events.

“I was doing fine the first 50 (meters) and then I felt it pop,” said Kosey, who will see a doctor today to determine if she suffered a torn hamstring or tendon. “It hurts so bad; I’m hoping I can push through it and keep training as best as I can.”

Kosey had a similar problem in the same meet a year ago but recovered.

“This time it feels a lot worse,” she said.

After Kosey’s injury, Superior pulled its athletes from most of the track events.

Carissa Welch placed first in the pole vault for the Spartan girls, clearing a height of 8 feet; and freshman Gizelle Sziron took second in the 100 hurdles by two-tenths of a second. The Superior girls also won the 4x800 relay.

For the boys, Superior’s Evan Walpole took second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:04.1. Ashland’s Bryce Miller won the race in 2:03.4.

Tyler Anderson also added a second-place finish for Superior by clearing a height of 9 feet in the pole vault.
