Brett Bukowski, a senior defenseman on the Superior High School hockey team this past winter, was one of 20 players selected to represent Team Wisconsin in the CCM Minnesota High School Hockey National Invitational Tournament (old Chicago Showcase), which will be held April 19-22 in Plymouth, Minn.

Tryouts took place two weeks ago at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

Other Spartans invited to try out for Team Wisconsin were defensemen Aaron Johnson and Brady Uotinen and forwards Caleb Dushkin and Nolan Holcombe.

The 45 players trying out for Team Wisconsin were chosen from a pool of players that played in the Wisconsin Senior Tournament, which took place March 23-25 in Waupun.

Section 1, which includes players from Superior, defeated Section 8 14-5 in the championship game. Section 1 also went 3-0 during pool play and outscored its opponents 32-13.

Since the eight sections format was introduced in 1997, Section 1 has three titles, and Section 8 has two. The game was a rematch of last years title match, which had Section 8 coming out with a 7-2 win over Section 1.

Holcombe led Section 1 in scoring with six goals and four assists. Dushkin had six points with three goals and three assists, Bukowski scored a goal, and Johnson and Uotinen each had three assists.

Team Wisconsin’s training camp is Saturday and Sunday at the Oregon Community Sports Center in Oregon. Included in the weekend’s activities will be three hours of practice and one game against the Oregon Outlaws of the Great Lakes Hockey League. The Outlaws include many former Wisconsin high school hockey players and several Division III college players.

NOTES: Also playing for Section 1 in the Senior Tournament was Spooner’s Ian Strasburg, the son of Steve and Colleen (Barton) Strasburg, both former Superiorities.
