SHS baseball team downs Spooner, 4-3

Nik Mattson’s two-strike, two-out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning gave the Superior High School baseball team a 4-3 win over the Spooner Rails Thursday evening in Spooner.

Spencer Severson scored the go-ahead run when he singled, moved up on Jordan McDonald’s sac bunt and Clayton Yeazel’s walk and came home on Mattson’s hit.

Grant Rindal pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts, to pick up his second win of the season.

Severson started on the mound for the Spartans, who improve to 3-0 on the year.

Jordan McDonald took over for Severson with Spooner leading 3-2 after three innings and allowed one run over four innings before giving way to Rindal.

Superior took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Paul Edwards led off the game with a triple and scored when Jordan Hughes reached on an error. Rindal then plated Hughes with a single.

After Spooner scored single runs in the first three innings, the Spartans tied the game at 3-3 with an unearned run in the fifth inning as Rindal reached on an error and scored on an error.

Superior had eight hits, two by Severson and one each by Ryan Myhre, Edwards, Rindal, Mattson, Dane Sislo and Yeazle.

Spooner, which lost in last year’s Division 2 state championship game, falls to 2-1 on the season.

The Spartans open Lake Superior Conference play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Hermantown.

They play their first home game of the season at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Eau Claire Memorial.

SPARTAN SPIN: Spooner won the JV game 18-17. Tyler Lehikoinen started for the Spartans and pitched two innings allowing two runs on one hit. Pete Guski, Erick Anderson and Logan Griffith pitched in relief. Lehikoinen led the Spartans at the plate with three hits, including an inside-the-park home run and three RBIs. Guski, Anderson, Will Mullens, Payton Flanders, Morgen Moen and Grant Hanson had the rest of the Spartan hits.
