‘Many Moving Parts’ explores self
Mary Schaubschlager, Northland College senior and local artist, holds a free public reception for her exhibit “Many Moving Parts” at 5 p.m. today at the Black Cat Coffeehouse in Ashland.
The exhibit features work created throughout a four-year student career, including painted, printed, graphite, and charcoal pieces. “Many Moving Parts” displays an exploration of self and offers to share discoveries with viewers.
The artwork on display is of a highly personal nature that results in a collective self-portrait that encompasses friends, homes, thoughts and anxieties.
“During my time at Northland I have experienced a period of drastic growth, and I have become more aware of my dynamic nature. I have many moving parts, and I am constantly changing,” says Schaubschlager.
Featured artwork includes more recent pieces that provide insights Schaubschlager has gained through exploring the process of printmaking and self as a machine.
“My ‘Control Yourself’ artwork series begins to discuss the result of understanding myself in a mechanical way and introduces the idea of self-control,” says Schaubschlager. “These ideas of control, process, and mechanics are also entangled in printmaking as a medium.”
